Portable toilet rental insurance
A portable toilet company has a liability exposure at every placement and an equipment exposure across hundreds of units scattered over a service area. Most need general liability, coverage for the units, and commercial auto for the pump trucks.

General liability
General liability responds when someone is hurt or property is damaged because of your operations: a customer injured when a unit tips, a car damaged during delivery at a construction site, or a slip on a restroom trailer step at a wedding. Construction and event customers will ask for a certificate naming them as additional insured.
Apply online
The online application asks the questions underwriters need for this coverage. Business owners fill it out directly, and insurance agents can complete it for a client or send it to them. Insurance agents can also request an appointment.
Coverage for the units
Units placed at customer sites are exposed to vandalism, fire, wind and theft, and an ordinary property policy only covers them at your yard. An inland marine floater covers units, hand wash stations and restroom trailers wherever they are placed.
Unit losses to ask about
Fire and vandalism
Units at events and construction sites get tipped, set on fire and tagged. Ask whether vandalism is covered at customer sites and what deductible applies per unit or per occurrence.
Windstorm
A strong storm can blow over a row of units at once. Some floaters carry a separate windstorm deductible, so check whether one storm counts as one occurrence.
Missing units
Units sometimes go missing from long-term placements with no sign of theft. Many policies limit or exclude mysterious disappearance, so keep placement records and unit numbers current, and consider GPS tags on restroom trailers.
What the application asks
- Number of standard units, ADA units, hand wash stations and restroom trailers
- Percentage of construction, special event and long-term placements
- Service area radius
- Number of service vehicles and drivers
- Waste disposal method and permits
- Gross receipts and payroll
How to get a quote
- Count your standard units, ADA units, hand wash stations and holding tanks, with an average replacement value for each type.
- List restroom and shower trailers individually with year, make, serial number and value.
- Break down your placements by construction, special event and long-term rentals.
- Send a copy of your rental agreement and note how often customers ask to be named additional insured.
- List pump trucks and delivery vehicles with VINs, plus drivers and their license dates.
- Gather your waste disposal permits and three to five years of loss runs.
Coverages often added
- Commercial auto for pump trucks and delivery trucks, including pollution from vehicle spills
- Contractors pollution liability for waste handling
- Workers compensation for service technicians
Common questions
Does general liability cover a waste spill?
Most general liability policies carry a pollution exclusion. A spill during servicing or transport usually needs pollution liability or an auto pollution endorsement. Ask about it on your application.
Are restroom trailers insured like toilets?
Restroom trailers are higher-value and are usually scheduled individually. The trailer's road use is covered under commercial auto when towed.
Can I add a customer as additional insured for one event?
Many general liability policies include a blanket additional insured endorsement for customers you agree in writing to add. If yours does, you can issue certificates without a separate endorsement each time. Ask whether your policy has one.
